It connects to your Mac or PC via USB (cable included) and acts as an external sound card. This is Audioengine's 24-bit Digital Audio Converter - or DAC. (The company also makes the older, $169 D1 Premium 24-bit DAC, which is larger but offers an optical-digital input, RCA outputs, a hardware volume knob, and 176.4 and 192 kHz capability. For Mac, under System Preferences/Sound, select “Audioengine D1” Step 2 –- connect the analog output of your D1 to any audio input of your active speakers, stereo, etc. For PC, the D1 should be recognized automatically.

I thought the outboard D1 DAC was supposed to inherently bypass any sound drivers upon plug-in, and I am using Foobar2000 which I understand is also able to bypass Windows Mixer but I haven't messed w/ the software settings yet (I'll try that next). Not sure I want to mess w/ the drivers to bypass Windows Mixer, or really if I need to.
